Nepal is more than just a place to do trekking. It is also an incredible destination place where you can enjoy day hikes and tours. The Kathmandu Valley is a large mountain valley with history, culture, temples and shopping. A one day tour of the Kathmandu Valley is a must for anyone who comes to this Himalayan country.
Kathmandu was once a large lake. It is believed that the Buddhist Deity Maha Manjushri took his sword and cut a gorge onto the east side of the lake, thereby creating the sacred Bagmati River that drains the valley. Geologists agree that it also was once a great lake, but that an earthquake probably created the gorge. Whatever the case, the Kathmandu Valley is a fertile place that not only supports three cities, but also many small villages and numerous farms.
The Valley is ringed by green mountains (local call them hills, but they rise to between 2200 and 2800 meters!). Weather conditions are ideal here, with summers usually around 31° C for the high and 20° C for the low. In winter, days are sunny and between 18° – 22 ° C with lows being around 4° - 6°. It only sees snow about twice a century!
The Valley has seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In addition, it is said that there are 1000 temples in the Valley. There are festivals every week, ranging from major religious festivals to local ethnic festivals of the various ethnic groups that call this Valley home.
There are great places to eat, along with excellent shopping. There are three Durbar Squares (Royal Palaces) in the Valley along with many museums to tour.
