Shivapuri National Park is one of the most underrated places in all of Nepal. The National Park is within the Kathmandu Valley and features some of the finest views of the mountains. Situated on the north side of the Valley, it is just nine kilometers north of Thamel.
Shivapuri Hill stands at 2563 meters and is the second highest of the "hills" that ring the Kathmandu Valley. Our journey begins at Budhanilkantha Temple where we will see an incredible stone idol of Lord Vishnu reclining on the water of the cosmic sea, supported by snakes. This idol is 5 meters in length and made of a single black stone that is not native of the Kathmandu Valley. It has been here since the time of the Licchivi Dynasty, and no one knows where this incredible stone came from or how they brought it to Kathmandu.
We hike up the hill and enter the national park. We will reach Nagi Gumpa which is a Buddhist nunnery on the way up to Shivapuri Hill. We will have great views while on the lookout for wild animals. The park, even though it is so close to Kathmandu, is home to leopards and bear as well as deer and host of other wildlife. In the spring and fall, see a great number of migratory birds as they make their way to and from Siberia.
The trek ends at Kopan Monastery which was established in 1975 and is a popular Buddhist monastery. You day ends with your return to your Three Star Hotel in Kathmandu.
