The area of Nagarjun is part of the Raniban (Queen's) forest that has become a part of Shivapuri National Park. Located just north of Thamel, it is less than an 30 minutes away where you can be in the middle of old growth forest.
Suddenly, the noise and traffic of the city disappears, only to be replaced by the sounds of birds singing and wind blowing through the trees. The forest is noted for its cliffs and is a popular place for people wishing to do rock climbing.
The traditional pilgrims trail to the top takes you past a cave with a large golden statue of Lord Buddha stands. From there, you can take a steep trail up the hill to the top where there is a Buddhist monastery as well as a lookout tower that offers splendid views of the Kathmandu Valley to the south or the snowcapped peaks to the north. There is also an alternative, easier trail up to the top so you can still enjoy the outstanding views from this observation point.
Nagarjun was home of Nagarjuna Palace, which was the summer residence of the old royal family. There is much to see and experience as you walk through this incredible place.
